Hello, my name is Delaney and I'm a third-year Civil Engineering student here at the University of Alberta. Today I'll be taking you on a tour of a day in my life here on campus. Let's get started. I've got a very busy day ahead of me so my first stop is to grab a coffee. My favorite place on campus to grab coffee is right here at the Tim Hortons in ETLC. It's close to my classes. It's a Canadian classic. Plus, there's always people online to have a quick chat with.
I'm heading to my first class for the day. My first class of the day is Structural Analysis. This is my favorite class. In this class, we learned how different forces such as people affect different structures such as buildings, particularly when they're moving around in them. I'll see you after class.
Here we are in the ELKO Engineering Garage and one of the main U of A engineering buildings on campus. The ELKO Engineering Garage is a Makerspace available to U of A staff and students where they can book training and work with all the different equipment that they have here for their various projects. This includes a lot of pretty cool 3D printing machines which they have in the back room there. I'm currently working on 3d modeling as part of my extracurricular research position in Biomedical Engineering. I 3D model different body parts to see if we can solve problems associated with them a little bit differently. The aim of the research is to see if sleep apnea can be treated using Invisalign instead of those really big invasive masks for children who don't really like to wear large breathing masks when they're sleeping.
Before we head out, I wanted to stop by the GEER Store. Here. They have lots of really cool engineering merch such as hoodies, and different supplies such as engineering paper available for all students. As part of my role as an Engineering Student Society Executive. I got to develop an Engineering Handbook. My team and I worked over the summer to put it together and it was a lot of fun. The handbooks were free and available to all students and can be picked up right here at the GEER Store.
I usually try to get some form of physical activity in during the day and I really like going for runs. My favorite part about Edmonton is its River Valley Network. And luckily the U of A is located right in the heart of it. So I have lots of opportunities to go for a quick run between classes. I'm part of a variety of student groups and clubs on campus.
Right now, I'll be meeting up with members of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Club to discuss the upcoming grad ceremony celebration. Hey guys! Now that we're done [with] our meeting, we're going to spend some time in the Civil Club Lounge where we're gonna play some games and blow off some of our competitive steam. After a full day, it's time to head home.
Thank you so much for following me around for a day in my life on campus at the University of Alberta. I hope you got to see a little bit about what I love so much about our community, working with so many different groups of people, driving innovation, and exploring solutions to big problems. I'll see you around campus!
